    Default Kids & Shad

Shad are a great species to get kids into fly fishing. I took out one of my regular striper clients and his daughter and mine with the focus on getting the two of them into some Shad. We headed to the Feather and were quickly into some nice fish. Nothing is better than watching two giggly 10-12 year old girls yanking on some eager shad. And them doubling up was priceless !! Twice ! What a great evening. Funny how one set up (Rio Slick shooter with a T- would get bit several times in a row and then another (Rio Outbound F/I) would get it on for a while. Who knows ? SHAD !!! All fish, and we got a bunch, where caught on an orange fly either a T.T. Dart or a P.R. Special. The only two flies I use !!

Family fishing trips can make for an ultimate bonding experience. Communicating and sharing in the pursuit of catching a fish on a fly is truly a memory making event. Years ago my late father, son and myself were fishing the Sac for shad below Red Bluff diversion damn. At one point during the day we had a triple hook-up. It was just" Hey, this is shad fishing." Now, looking back....Priceless!
Maury, thanks for helping me knock the dust off my memory archives.
