    Default Wood Duck Feather

Hey, I've got a buddy who killed a few wood ducks this past duck season and has them whole in his freezer. Anyone have experience collecting their own feathers? Other than the flank feathers, are there others that are sought after for tying? Thanks

    Russ -
The flank feathers (golden tan with tiny black dashes are used on many patterns for tails, wings, shell backs, wing cases, etc. The flank feathers with the black and white bars on the tips of the feathers are sought after by full dress Atlantic salmon tiers. They need them matched and paired up. Best to pair them up and put them small zip lock bags if you're supplying Atlantic salmon tiers. They marry them into wings and use them as shoulders on many patterns. I'm not aware of patterns that call for any of the other feathers n that duck. I suppose the wing primaries have biots that could be used but they'd be gray.

Just remember that it is illegal to sell or trade the feathers. You can earn serious karma by offering them to people on East Coast or National bulletin boards. They can't get as many WD as we are able to.

Many "Catskill"-type flies use the lemon flank (without the black and white bars).

Also, don't forget the CDC off the ducks if they are whole.

(Sometimes people you send them to will send something back...loophole is that you did not offer them for trade, but still got something in return)

Is that right? Even for non-protected species that can legally be hunted? I didn't know that.

Can't find anything on trading, per se, but I know CA DFW considers it as such.

What does this mean for buying flies made with wood duck?

    Question Commercial Trading....

This is an interesting subject. The Fly Shop in Redding offers lemon and barred Wood Duck feathers for sale and I've seen and bought them in other stores. Does the sections cited apply only to individuals??? Or, is there some kind of permitting process that allows commercial sale of Wood Duck???
