Default My early season pursuit of Russian River Steelhead

Nearly one day a week since late August I devoted a few hours on the Russian for my desire to catch a steelhead on my spey rod.
When I leave my house I am hopeful that this time will be more than just casting practice.
In past early seasons I have pickedup a half pounder or two.
    This year only suckers.
It's still great to get out there though, the river, the birds , trees turning color. The decompression that happens when fly fishing.
It's not the Klamath but still beautiful.

I love that line from that flim trailer Low and Clear ( The biggest mistake about fishing is that it is about catching fish .)

So now with the river blown out, its back to the casting pond, the fly tying table.
May be dust off those plans to build the z pram.

I will keep a eye on the sky check the river flows, and have faith she will clear, and then one day a steelhead returning from the mighty Pacific will meet me and my fly on the Russian.

When I was younger and working in the area near the Lower American River I use to fish it a lot after work.

It was just nice to get out on the river which looks and feels like you are not in a big city anymore.

That was all drive, walk and wade fishing. Nice and simple.....

In the past decade I have been lucky enough to also float the river more with Andy Guibord and that is another level of fun with the river.

Today I just like to go out somewhere with a friend and fly fish for anything....I guess I like the fly casting?

Catching fish is a bonus now.....

Bravo! You've taken to words right out of my mouth. Well said.
Happy trails and good fishing Toby.
See you on the water sometime....
