Default Fly Fishing Tournament - Oct. 20th and 21st

Coming this October 20th and 21st is the 3rd annual October Cutthroat Classic fly fishing tournament on the Truckee River in Reno, NV.

The tournament is a day and a half long fly fishing only tournament where two-person teams will compete for cash payouts, the next 12 months worth of bragging rights, and a spot for their names on the OCC tournament trophy. The cost is $100 per two-person team, which includes entry into the tournament prize pool and a BBQ on Sunday afternoon/evening. The tournament dates are Saturday and Sunday October 20th and 21st, 2012 in the biggest little city in the world. We hope to see you there!

For more information about the tournament or to register please email Kevin at flyfishocc@gmail.com or call 775-848-8894.

To give you a feeling of what the tournament is like, last year 13 teams from all over the country competed: pros, amateurs, first timers, locals, and even a high school team from Sparks. There was a lot of beer and whiskey drinkin' and some HUGE fish caught (a 24" brown took the big fish award). Teams were catching cutts, whitefish, lots of bows, some browns, and even some close encounters with some wild horses. If you like to fish and enjoy some good times with some good people, this is where it's at. You might even win a cash prize!

Since I have not fished the Truckee in Reno, is this a wading only event or do people use drift boats?
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

This year may have a little different setup than last year. Last year it was wade access only with prescribed sections (beats) that were drawn at random. This year the beats may go away in lieu of a wider reach of tournament water and an open access policy. "Open access" meaning teams can float if they want. The catch is that check-out/check-in times will be strictly enforced with the possibility of tournament penalties for late check-ins and early check-outs.

I dont know if that will work. I kinda get the feeling half the teams will be trying to fish the same water.

Was planning on entering but if not "beats" format is doesn't seem like it keeps the playing field level for us out of towners.

Ya, we totally appreciate the feedback, and we've been going back and forth between the two formats. Having beats can be good and bad, the same as an open format can. We may even split up the formats between the two days. Random beats on day one and open on day two, which will be a shorter day than day one.

I'll drop Kevin (the tourney organizer) an email and have it locked down a.s.a.p.

In the mean time, here are a couple videos from the last two tournaments... Good times!

    Default Format Change

Thanks again for the feedback. The decision was made last night to keep the format the same as it was last year: prescribed sections (beats) chosen at random, and bank access only, no boats.

Each team will draw two sections for day one (one morning beat, one afternoon beat) and one section for day two.

As you mentioned, this will help level the playing field a little bit and keep anglers spread out more.

Should be a good tournament this year with a majority of the entry fee going toward the cash payout prize pool.

    Default Game on

We'll see everyone who's competing in the tournament tomorrow at 7am at Rock Park on the banks of the Truckee River in Sparks, NV. Fishing begins at 8am.

To answer a couple questions: the registration fee is $100/two person team plus an optional $25/angler big fish add-on. 50% of the prize pool goes to the team with the most total length of fish caught after two days, 35% to 2nd, and 15% to third. The angler who pays the $25 big fish add-on and lands and photographs the biggest fish of the tournament will receive the entire big fish cash prize pool.

    For more details visit: https://www.facebook.com/OctoberCutthroatClassic/info

If you'd still like to compete, please come to Rock Park in Sparks, NV (1283 S Rock Blvd, Sparks, NV) at 7am tomorrow morning (Oct 20th) to register. All registration fees should be paid in cash.
