    Default Small Bass Poppers

I just finished some small bass poppers I made from balsa wood and these are my favorite ones to toss out for bass and those aggressive little bluies. I found the paint at wal-mart for less than 2 dollars and it is an acrylic paint in the craft section that is water base and very easy to use.

    Cool Poppers....

Good job on those poppers. I too am a fan of balsa wood for the bodies. They look good and catch fish.

Great looking flies. Yes, I buy my acrylic paint at Walmart too, not very expensive and lots of colors. What do you use for the final clear-coat? I've always used Sally Hansen's "Hard as Nails", works great. One other thing you might want to try when you make your eyes and other spots is to use the blunt end of drill bits to put the spots on. Dip in paint, and dab the spot on lightly, not having the bit touch the popper body if possible. Gives you some nice, round spots. Use different size bits and different colors to make the eyes and give a very spotty look to the bug. Good luck.

    Cool Painting Poppers....

I'm not so sure I want to mess up a drill bit by painting with it. So, I use the head of finish nails. They're very effective and you can pick a number of sizes for the same price as one drill bit.

I'm sure finish nails would work fine, that's a good solution. I use drill bit because I own them already for woodworking, I don't buy them for painting poppers. I use a paper towel to wipe off the paint, but even if you didn't I don't think it would harm the bits. I paint with the back end of the bit, not the tip that does the drilling.
