Many years ago I was fishing the American River with Vern Jeramica who is a world class fly fisher.

Seemed like he hooked fish all the time....did matter what species......he was fishing a sinking shooting head and was really vaccuming the river bottom.

That when I figured that I had lots to learn....

I bought a big 9 weight fiberglass Steelhead outfit from Sports Unlimited many years ago and at Watt Avenue on the Lower American River I was fishing my first time out with it.

After about an hour I hooked a big fish and fought it to the shore.

It was a very big golden sucker...but I was happy because I had hooked and played something pretty big on that new outfit.

It still surprises me the wide array of flies those things will take. The last one I caught ate a red striper fly which really surprised me.
