Default Why Hatchery Born Salmon & Steelhead Struggle in the Wild

Here's another interesting article on the hatchery vs. wild fish debate. Researchers on Oregon's Hood River sampled genetics from 12,700 Steelhead to compile this data on why hatchery fish do not reproduce as well in the wild and if and why they degenerate the wild gene pool.

    Arrow Hatchery vs Natural Born

Well,.... Doesn't seem like there's much new in this article. One interesting thing that came out of this is the declining reproduction numbers in later generations of hatchery born fish. If that's an ongoing trend, it has some negative implications for our hatchery program. Hopefully, follow-up research will result in development of better/newer hatchery management practices for future operations....

True D, there isn't too much in there any of us haven't heard, but it's going out on MSNBC. Knowing and working within these media "giants", I know how important it is to reach the wider audience and that this is a small step in the bigger picture.
