    Default Eel River 10-13

I went out yesterday afternoon to look for half pounders and take my first look at how some of the runs have changed. Managed to land seven half pounders and two jack salmon and lost another jack.

While playing a half pounder it was being chased by a large squaw fish, the squaw fish pursued the half pounder until it got right up to me. I have never seen this before.
Fishing is always good, the catching may not be.

Hey Bruce. I had a similar experience with a squaw fish on the upper sac below sims a few years ago. I was fishing along a rock face with a deep drop off when I hooked a small 10" trout, as I was about to reach down to release the fish the water exploded with thrashing, it scared the crap out of me. Then my line takes off and I have a what looks like a giant squaw fish on the end of my line. I fought it for a minute or so and then it snaps the line.

was wondering what you caught the jacks on, we here in Sacramento on the American are having a hell of a salmon run and would love to target some jacks with a fly rod.

Some years ago when we had high returns some of the locals were fly fishing for the salmon.

Some used egg imitations on a sink-tip line.

No I wish I could. I just got a new rod that would be perfect for those Klamath and trinity fish. There are tons of silvers in the rivers here. If you thought it was crowded here in the winter you should see it now.
