Try to fish the Truckee River from around mid-June to through July for a nice window of hatches and good water flows and temps.

**Most trout streams have a 4 to 6 week window in the spring/early summer when fly fishing is just a little easier.

October is averagely the other big deal for most mid-elevation trout streams.

August I would be at the higher elevations.

Bill's right about the "easy window", but it's difficult to say on a big-water year, when the window will appear.
Maybe mid june this year, maybe later.
We might have enough water this year to be good in august too.
Glance at the report on the T for semi-current conditions.
Below town is not easy fishing right now with these flows, but upstream is beautiful, and may hold surprises.
Tahoe is a surface release dam, the H2O temps are nice now, later it will be warm.
Some tan color in the afternoon below Squaw crk.
The Truckee is a firm, but a fair teacher.
These fish like to see a "perfect drift", with the right bug.
I should add, the takes can be lightning fast, get twitchy, gun-fighter fast.
Stay focused, don't miss your chance.
Glennshire day use area is one place to start. But it gets alot of pressure.
I reccomend picking up a T-river map at Mnt. Hardware.
    PM me if need be.

I was thinking about hitting the T this weekend also, any one know if the camp grounds are open around Boca? And if so, how much snow is left?

No snow. Camping is wide open. Parking along the LT might be hard to find though.

    Default Truckee Considerations...

The big Truckee (BT) is currently in the midst of run-off. Both Bill (mid-June on...) and Jim (fish the upper river along state route #89); have provided valid advice & one's best strategy right now.

If you do come here soon there are two important condsiderations; flows and water temps. Wherever you go I suggest you fly fish "low & slow" along the lower water column. My preferred rig is a tandem big/small fly combo...and the necessary lead or tin to tick the bottom occassionally.

The upcoming 2011 summer issue (out in late May) of Sierra Fisherman magazine (www.sierrafisherman.com) will feature an article I've authored on the Truckee river (CA-side of the CA/NV border.). Also in www.flyfishingcalifornia.blogspot.com are posts of April 7 (More Snow!...Seasonal Prognosis) and April 20 (Quickie E-Fishing Report VI). Although dated they do provide comments that are still pertinent.

Walk softly and cary a BIG net

Actually, the previous advice here has been pretty good from my little bits of time up there. I'd say that if you have the funds, this river would be a good place to get a "higher education" by hooking up with a guide. Only other thing I'll say is to second the point about light quick takes, every fish that I've caught there this winter and spring had me thinking I'd snagged another rock... learning to "read the indicator" has proven to be as challenging as any other aspect of flyfishing for me.
    Good luck!

JB, so true! Folks think this bobber thing is a lay-up.
It's taken me much longer to perfect this technique, compared to throwing a dry.
Mostly the question is "Was that a tic, or a take"?
Unless of course, you "hook the bottom".
Saw that again early this week. Tugging, yarding, rod bent over.
Turned out it wasn't a rock.

Camping is good now, but nights can be chilly.
Not freezing every night, but some nights.
