Flows on the Lower Sacramento River dropped to fishable levels last week so several of us headed out to check out the bite. We were very pleasantly surprised! While springtime can be an exceptional time on this river, the number of grabs and size and health of the big Rainbows after so much heavy water was a welcome relief.

At times the fishing (and the catching) was down right silly good. Early in the day the fish chow on Pheasant Tail nymphs, changing their preference slightly to beadhead PMD's as the hatch progresses and more bugs show. Later in the afternoon both spring caddis, size 16 in olive brown or black Birdsnets were the ticket until the bigger summer caddis started to pop when the Fox Poopah took stage. We found numerous fish in the riffs as well as the flats. With flows dropping even more this week the great action is likely to continue. Consider this your complimentary notice to get here now!
