Beginning at 4 p.m. today, the federal Bureau of Reclamation will increase releases from Folsom Dam into the lower American from 15,000 cubic feet per second to 20,000 cfs for flood control management.

The increased releases are necessary to meet flood-space regulatory requirements within the reservoir, according to a bureau news release. The increased releases will remain at that volume until further notice.

Because of recent storms, releases from Folsom Dam were increased from 8,000 cfs to 15,000 cfs on Monday,

People recreating in or along the lower American River, downstream of Nimbus Dam to the Sacramento River, are advised to take safety precautions during periods of high river flows. Officials said some sections of the bike trail along the American River and parts of Discovery Park may become inundated as flows increase.
