    Default Hennan 10-16 report

Gene and I decided to hit Hennan and give it a try, Gene has been there before a couple times and this would be my second trip. My first trip last year I got skunked, this year was a little different. We got to the lake about 8 and was greeted with a nice cloudy sky with little to no wind. By the end of the day we did have wind though. Saw the report of the fish caught this year and needless to say we were happy to see what we saw. There has been a good number of fish caught this year and we even got a few ourselves. Pretty much caught all our fish on a black wiggle tail using an intermediate line. We found most fish close to shore where the wind was blowing, there were fish caught further out but we concentrated on the weedy areas. Numbers wise we both caught around 6 fish including some real nice big cutts in the 20+ inch range. I caught a monster rainbow, yes I said a rainbow probably about 22 or 23 inches. Jumped off my lap as soon as I took the hook out so not pictures, but it had no red cutt under the jaw at all and the colors were all rainbow. We also found a monster dead rainbow up on shore. Gene said it was the best day he ever had on Hennan and I can say the same. Even got blessed by having a big beautiful bald eagle fly over. Water temp was about 55 everywhere. Even caught some young cutt's which shows me that the future fish are living strong in the lake.

So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I am so jealous about the 'bow you caught. I've seen photos of the slabs that live in there. Sounds like an excellent day on Heenan. I stopped by the lake on my way home today but I guess you guys had already left.

Good job guys. What a great trip to remember. A saw a picture just today Scott of a big cut from there caught a different year...and I was really surprised how big it was. Looked like a four pound fish. You know if there are many there that size or are fish that size there a pretty rare catch?

And Scott did your fish fight really well for their size? Or was it like half the fight of the rainbow you got? Were many of them leapers?

Gene, did you push your hat off or did the gusts get that strong before you left?

I've caught fish to 8lbs and a buddy landed a 31" cutthroat and a 30+" rainbow a few years ago.So to answer your question is yes there are large fish in Heenan and a 4 lber is nice but nowhere near the upper range of the size of fish in Heenan.

    Default Twisting my arm

Thanks Scott....For me Hennan is a tough lake for me to fish...sight fishing is almost non-existing...this time of the year the match the hatch is slim...and i don't like trolling a fly. All that changed on this trip....with over head clouds...some wind...water temp. 55 degrees...the cutts were close to the surface, and sometimes on the surface looking for something to eat...there was a black midge hatch coming off...and the little fish were feeding on them....now some of the little fish on the surface turned out to be the bigger cutts that i caught...today was special day at Hennan, and i spent some time fishing for a toad (bigger fly 3 inch), but a 1 1/2 black wiggle tail was what they liked. So what would be a good fly to use on this special day for a toad????....Blueracer yes we did get hit by some 25+ mph gusts.

    Hey Gene and Scott,

I was fishing by you guys when you were near the inlet. I had similar results. I landed 4 cuts from 17 to 21 inches. I was in the blue pontoon boat and Gene said hello as he went by. I enjoyed the fly-by by the Bald Eagle as well. I also fished on Friday and landed 6 including two in the 22-23 inch range that were very thick. It seems like the fish are feeding very well this year as I got into some very thick fish. Friday I also ended the day on the East Carson. Landed a couple on dries including a 17 incher. Also broke one off on the set, ldr'ed a couple and missed a few more.

It was a nice couple of days in the mountains.
