Great photo! What kind of rod is that?
Don C.
Don, the rod is a 7' 4-5wt glass rod that I picked up recently. I actually put the reel on the rod as a prop for the mayfly. I was down at sailor bar with my son who was trying to catch lizards and bugs and the mayfly did not escape him but was released after he had some time to check it out. The pipevine swallow tail catapillar took one for the team that day though. I am still working on him being gentle.

EGADS!
Not the endangered (threatened>?) pipevine swallowtail>?
Too funny actually.

I think that must be a big #6/8 Hexagenia mayfly.
They hatch on Lake Natomas at sunset and some of the ponds along the lower American River.

I would love it if someone would go check out lake Natoma in the evening, especially when the wind is low, to see if there are any Hex mayflies coming off.
A dead give away are ducks eating them on the surface at sunset.
