............so much, an eye witness account
Friday: I started near Del Loma and saw one about 6 lbs landed by an indicator guy. Saw two steelhead rolling in the tail out of a pool. My two buddies and I fished it pretty hard for a couple of hours swinging traditional steelhead wet flies with no takes. Three indicator guys did not catch any other fish. Talked briefly with Jason Hartwick as we were leaving, you guys do any good there ?
Rumor #1 from fellow fly fisherman at Del Loma: They are all up at JC but not biting.
Fished a few spots between Del Loma and North Fork and saw no fish. Finished Friday afternoon near Evans Bar and saw no fish, no takes.
Sat: Started with breakfast at the Nugget in Weaverville. Friendly chat with a few gear guys sitting next to us.
Rumor #2: There are a ton of fish in the Swimming Hole at JC. Turns out they were talking about salmon.
Sat we decided to avoid the crowds at JC and tried low on Trinity and Klamath. Fished Hoopa near casino with a few half pounders to hand on swung flies. Then went to various points on the Klamath upstream and downstream of Weitchpec and caught many quarter pounders, swinging.
Rumor #3 from a guy in a pickup truck at gas station in Weitchpec: There are a ton of fresh fish coming up from the mouth of the Klamath.
Sun: Tried the 299 Bridge hole at Douglas City and saw no fish.
Rumor #4 from the convience store clerk in Douglas City: They are catching some up at Steel Bridge.
Rumor #5 from a guy in a pickup truck who stopped to chat about fishing at the convience store at Douglas City: They are catching silvers at Hawkins Bar.
Fished the afternoon upstream of JC and nailed a 6 lb hatchery buck swinging an orange colored traditional wet fly (on a small spey rod) through the gut of a nice deep run. Kind of dogged me and I thought it might be a brown. Have you noticed that the wild fish jump and run way more than the hatchery ones? Finished the day back at the top of JC and saw no other fish. Neither of my friends stuck an adult steelhead all weekend.
Rumor #6 via email, concerning hearsay, from a friend of a friend: 50 or more steelhead were spotted moving rapidly upstream around Pigeon Point, but not biting.
Tally for weekend*:
Juicy Rumors = 6
Steelhead seen with my own eyeballs = 4
Adult steelhead to hand = 1
*Disclaimer: Did not fish most of the popular runs in JC, and did not stop along the river if there was more than one other car already at the pull out.
