Veteran Striper anglers Joe Shirshac and Terry Jenkins have both landed over 20# Stripers this week from the lower American River on flies.

They have been drifting the river in Terry's 16' Lowe Jon boat on weekdays.

I guess it's nice to be retired?

Now that the Shad are pretty much gone those big Stripers are getting hungry.

I know veteran guide Charlie Gonzales has been doing well to on larger fish now too.

** We have a nice run of Half-pounder Steelhead in there now too.

Time to hit the river early and late in the day.

Thanks for the heads up David.............

    Post Wading for Steelhead

    Bill-

Where are some good places to wade for Steelhead on the American River?

Also, I hear that the Steelhead are in the upper part of the river, do you know if this is up in the Sailor Bar area?

I believe when the flows have been high that the fish usually move quickly through the river.

I would be looking from Rosemoor Bar up to Sailor Bar.

As the flows lower the fish might stack up in September down lower like Paradise Beach to Gristmill.

    Dropping to 2,300 CFS -

If it stays between 2,500 and 2,000 ..... it is going to open up a LOT of spots for the wader !!!

    Great David

With my short 29" inseam I love it around 2,000 cfs myself.

That should get the Half-pounder action in full swing now.

Sept/Oct are top months for those little chrome missles from the ocean.

Most of the time I spent out there (1999-2005) , it ran @ 1,200 most of the year . When it got to 2,500 CFS ...... you really had to watch what you were doing because while it looked do-able , the mix of extra depth and current (especially the current) would cause you to bail in bad places .

1.200 CFS was idea for covering the water - you could access almost all of the same water the boats could .... and if you could cast , you could fish it with a LOT more stealth !

I don't know if the American will ever flow that low year-'round in the future .
