    Default Shad ideas.....

It sounds to me like all the Valley rivers have higher flows now which is wonderful for bringing in the Shad but not so nice for wading for them.

Fishing from an anchored boat is very popular early season and wading upriver is better in late May and especially June.

But as soon as the flows go down on any of the normal Shad rivers I would be out there wading for them.

The Lower Sacramento River gets the largest runs of Shad.

The Feather, Yuba and American Rivers are good too.

Right now they are at the mouth of the Feather and American Rivers but you need a boat or a Spey rod?

I'm not ready for combat fishing at Discovery Park so I'm going to keep trying on the American. With the higher flows this year Harrington and Rossmore should be good. I'm going snowboard this weekend but will do a recon Sunday afternoon. I've got a sweet Winston switch rod so I can spey or overhead cast as necessary. I'm just itchin' to catch my first one on a fly.

Snowboarding is out since it's raining up there. Heading out early tomorrow for a top to bottom recon of the American.

I hit the mouth before sunrise for an hour and a half Saturday morning and didn't get a grab. Went to Miller Park for a little while, no one home. Tried the lower river and got 3 in the first 10 minutes then nothing. Tried the middle river, and the upper river for nada. It took me 9 hours and the only ones I caught were in a 10 minute period.

I went back to the lower river yesterday and got 5 in 4 hours of casting. They are coming into the American but not in huge numbers.

Yep, a guy told me they were catching them there so I gave it a try for 10 minutes. I was at the South end of the park. I saw 3 guys fishing by the boat ramp.

7110 Winston switch rod with a 385 grain Skagit head and a 12 ft Type 8 sink tip. For the faster water at the Log Hole 10 ft ot T-14.
