    Default Dumb question....

Poly leaders... when you are putting them on a Skagit head, does that replace the "tip" or do you put it on in front of the tip? I think I know the answer but ...

Skagit heads/lines are designed to balance with a 15' sink-tip or custom lengths of T-14.

15' sink-tips come in line size #4 to 12 and range in weight from 60 to 190 grains.

Skagit heads/lines are best for fast tips and big flies for winter Steelhead.

Scandinavian (Scandi) heads/lines are designed to be used with Poly/Versi leaders or longer tapered mono leaders.

Poly/Versi leaders come in 5', 10' and 15' and range in weight from 11 to 115 grains.

'Scandi' heads/lines are best for small/medium flies for summer Steelhead.

You don't put poly leaders on a skagit head, you put sink tips, or tips with heavy grains. The sink tips have much more grains/mass to balance the head. Poly leaders are more for scandi heads that have a really thin diameter tip of the head and require a light leader for balance. On Scandi heads you can use mono leaders as well, same as poly leaders.

Many of the "tip systems" come with a 15ft. floating tip.

So just to clarify... if I have a fly line (any line really) with a front taper... the poly leader will in effect create a sink tip of the specified length.

    Acurate?

I guess you could say that was true. However, it is necessary to match the leader to the line. If you try to put a standard mono leader or poly type leader on a Skagit line, you will end up finding that the leader will "dump" on you. The force and speed of the fly line will over take the leader and you end up with a mess at the end of the line. In other words, there is not a turn over of the leader and fly. It is always best to get out there and see what happens. Nothing replaces on the water experience. I know you have a little drive to get to the water.

You can use the rio 15ft 7.0 ips leader on a skagit head no problem. it weighs about 180 grains. Its not much different than throwing a t-8 sinktip I mistakenly put it on my head one time and I worked fine.
