Delta trips
I went out twice this week to the Delta. On Wednesday I put in at Korth's and the place was foggy as hell. I'm telling you, trying to put a boat in at some of these launch ramps is a real challenge, but I digress....
We (son and I) went out across the San Jo, grabbed the bank and worked our way west. Fished Santa Clara Shoals, mouth of Fisherman's Cut, intersection of False River and Fisherman's Cut. Ran across and worked inlets and holes at 7-Mile slough and was on my way up to the marinas where we ran into some good top-water action a 1-month ago and we could hear ol' Stinky (sea lion that smells like an In-and-Out burger) bellowing around our spot. Let Stinky have his hole and went back across to the shoals and fished the back of an island at the top of the incoming. First fish of the day was a 3-pounder, followed by several more schoolies until we left as it was nearly dark. I could have peppered those fish, as they were schooled up and on the feed, close to the bank. A huge tanker ship lumbered by and with lights on, was visible mostly as a shadow in the fog. PUT THOSE NAV LIGHTS ON AND LEAVE THEM ON when it's foggy!
Went back on Friday, as this was the only day I could go-- went by myself. Cold, crappy, drizzly, rainy, and dark... come to think of it, if I wasn't fishing it would be considered depressing. Launched at Tower Park, as the wind was whipping up and the San Jo had rollers. Another great adventure in boat launching. Damn, incoming was to begin in an hour and I couldn't go to the Shoals. Instead went up to Sycamore and Beaver sloughs, fished the Mok as well, then came back down fished Little Potatoe, lower Mok. Not one grab. There was plenty of fish in the Mok and associated sloughs. Just couldn't get them to bite. Not one bite the entire day. Today I have a cold. great report, huh?!
When all else fails, put down the pole and swim with the dog.
