I have never really used a line cleaner, should I? Is there one that is superior to the rest, or are they pretty much the same stuff repackaged?

In the "old days" we would wash our lines in warm water and mild soft first. Hand dish washing soap.
Then dress them with Mucilin paste or some kind of line dressing. Russ Peak line dressing was popular for years. Now the TMC line dressing is very popular. Cortland had that felt pad with dressing in it.
I think you still need to clean off the stuff that has collected on your line and then apply a line dressing.
Lots of different things going on now with the new types of floating fly lines though.
