Default Looking for Upper Sac info

Has anyone been out to the upper sac lately? I've heard that the water is low. And since I have not heard anymore reports about good fishing I am wondering if I should take my Father to another trout stream next Sunday.

I would like to take him to a blue ribbon trout stream for the possibility of catching many or a few big trout, the destination needs to be easy to fish, not challenging, due to his inexperience.

    Any suggestions?

    Adam,

I would call the Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir to check.

I heard the lower McCloud River and the Pit River were fishing good.

Well, I would think the Pit may be too much for him if he is inexperienced. The wading issue is never ending.

Upper Sac should be decent and the McCloud should be even better.

Truckee has been pretty good, but getting a lot of pressure. LT is way down, I wouldn't bother.

I would stick to the Up Sac or McCloud.

I camped at Sims the weekend before last. Managed to hit it just right (Lucky) late Friday afternoon, 12+ fish to 17" over 3.5 hours and more than that missed. Yellow Stimi was the fly. Saturday was the exact opposite. Fished hard all day, at lots of different spots, for 2 small fish. I talked to a bunch of folks, and they all had minimal success.

So.... I don't know that I would look to the Upper Sac for quality fishing right now.

I also heard the McCLoud was good right now

The lower McCloud River is a cold one and seems to hold up well through the summer.

I guided the upper sac and mcloud about a week and a half ago. I would say the mcloud is your better bet. The upper sac was on fire early june, but it isn't so hot now. sure there are some fish to be had but you need to get pretty technical.

    Thanks for your help guys.

Any suggestions about what stretch of the McCloud to fish?

I have only fished it once with minimal success.

Okay guys, here's my plan: Fish the morning on the Upper Sac on the way to the McCloud, then fish the McCloud during the evening on Sunday. Then my Father and I will fish the McCloud most of the day Monday then leave late in the afternoon. I have heard that both the Sac and McCloud had little Yellow Sallies, below is a picture of a recently my designed Sally pattern modeled after an Elk Hair caddis with a bullethead twist, very simple.

This pattern i s nothing fancy but it looks pretty good for freestone waters, high floating and buoyant.

I will report after the trip to tell you guys how it went. Thanks to all of you who have IM'd me with great advice.

Do you guys have any spots to recommend the My Father and I fish on the Upper Sac in the morning? I would like to know about a good area to fish dries. I've only fished the Upper Sac a couple of times, what about Simms?

Either Simms or Soda Creek, but Soda creek is usally crowded on the weekends
