South Fork, Snake River

Have not had much time for fishing lately, or reading posts about fishing, but last week, I did have an opportunity to fish the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho. Wow! It was one of my best fishing days ever. My first cast yielded a nice cutthroat that hit a soft hackle.



Next was a rainbow, and it just kept going from there.





Lost count but probably ended up with 20+ fish on nymphs, big foam dries, etc. Rainbows, cutthroat, cutbows, browns and a few whitefish. Messed up the photo on a 20-inch rainbow. Great guide, Mike Janssen, from World Cast Anglers out of Jackson, WY.

Great report Don. I love the pictures. Is is it the Snake River where they want you to bonk the Cutts if you catch them? I do remember reading about a river system in Idaho where the were trying to get rid of a fish. I just don't remember what system of what fish. The old brain ain't what she used to be.

Mark: The sign with fishing regulations where we put in did not have any specific bonking instructions, but I think it is just the opposite. They want to preserve the native cutthroat, but rainbows and cuttbows have taken over in recent years. I think it is catch and release for cutthroat, but anglers are encouraged to take rainbows and hybrids. We released everything.

I did fish at a nice lake near San Diego a while back (Cuyamaca), where anglers are required to bonk everything except for small-mouth bass. I ended up with 25 crappie and a couple of nice trout stuffed into the bow of my float tube after a couple of hours. Interesting regulations.
