What is the perfect/preferred use for an 8 weight fly rod in Northern California?

The top selling singled handed fly rods are usually 4 piece and 9' long.

The #5, #6 and #8 line sizes being the most popular.

In Califoria the 9'6" length is very popular too. Nice for wading, float tubing or high stick nymphing.

The 9'#8 in 4 piece fits a lot of needs.

It is a heavy freshwater or light saltwater fly rod. Remember now that they are very light weight today too.

In Nor Cal it would be good for winter steelhead, fall salmon and especially throwing heavy lines and Clouser minnows for Stripers.

Some might use it for large mouth bass too.

    Tony,
We use a 5,6, or 7 wt in the surf; however, an 8-wt should work for stripers in the Pt Reyes area and the like.

The 8wt has many situations, throwing shooting heads for salmon, stripers and trout. Lohanton's out at Pyramid to be exact. I've also used at Davis during the damsel hatch. When I still lived in so cal it was a lot of fun to chase bonita and barracuda with.
