Default First Steelhead landed on my spey rod (uh, two-hander :)

I love spey casting and swinging. I hooked one large buck early in the day on the American then landed this gal at Rossmoor at dusk, late Feb. I bought an ECHO 14' 9wt. and a Danielsson reel which have ben really fun to use.

also, I agree with the whole fishing over redds problem, especially the shallow areas where clearly they're spawning leave 'em alone - bottom line though is that steelhead will spawn throughout the system wherever there is good gravel - shallow, deep, and in between, so we're all walking through and fishing over spawning areas almost everytime we fish, unless you're very selective on your spots.

    Congratulations!

Your first spey-caught fish is very memorable.

    What fly did it take?

yup..... there are a few spots we stop fishing up here in the fall because there are too many Salmon Redds wading to and from the spots.... and they are great Steelhead riffles.
Way to go on your fish...! very nice...

    Congratulations Scott

    That is a lovely fish.

I am so excited that Spey casting seems to be bringing back classic Steelheading techniques.

I thought it was going to be a "lost art" when the Steelheading got so bad in the 1980s after the big drought we had.

Seemed like everyone who was successful the last 10 years was using indicators but now the Spey guys are changing that.
