On a recent trip to Las Vegas, I took the opportunity to travel to Lee's Ferry, a place that I've always wanted to fish. The time of year was not optimal for great fishing but managed to pick up a few fish.
Stayed at Marble Canyon Lodge and in the morning met Dave Foster from Marble Canyon Outfitters. http://www.leesferryflyfishing.com/
We fished some shallow gravel bars using size 22 and 24 zebra midges and scud patterns. Fish were in the shallows in slight depressions in the gravel bars. We were sight fishing and had quite a few grabs but could not hang onto them. Went upriver and fished some deeper runs and hooked a few fish on a San Juan Worm. Later in the afternoon there was some dry fly action on very small midge patterns.
Dave is an outstanding guide, very versed in the history and geology of the canyon. He is also hired by the Department of Fish and Game to do redd monitoring and electroshocking of the fish stocks. This knowledge comes in real handy when he's guiding!
The fishing was almost secondary to the scenery and the thing that I was not expecting was the bird life in the canyon. The spot where we ate lunch had a nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons. A large Redtail was in the area and the Peregrines were going crazy. Lots of waterfowl - bluebills, buffleheads, goldeneye and mallards.
Great trip ~ some photos follow...
