I ave fished the Umpqua many times, mostly from the mid 80's thru 2005. Lots of small fish below Elkton, bigger fish in the Big K stretch. I used to fish with Mike Moore (long since retired) and Todd...

Fish can definitely "hear", but their sensitivity to loud noises, above water or in the water, seems to vary widely. I remember fishing the Situk for steelhead in October years ago. Our guide would...
Is the RS2 still available?
If Todd hannah is still guiding I can strongly recommend him. I fished the Umpqua yearly from 1995-2001 with Todd and Mike and Cecilia Moore before that. Lots of fun on the top in the afternoons....
I saw two, too close to stepping on one of them, on the N. Yuba above Sierra City on Saturday. Next time I'll check "No snakes" in the preference box. (Shudder)
My Grandfather taught us to always role the male ferrule on your face next to your nostril. Just enough oil there to prevent any problems on the river.
Call Fin n' Feather in Couer D'Alene. They'll help you. Good luck.
Grandkids just seem to make the whole world brighter. I get such a blast out of their excitement over catching even the smallest fish! (And then they get older and the fish get bigger. I love it when...
Wow...I haven't heard that expression in a long time. I'll raise a glass to Bjorn tonight. He's a good man. (And congratulations on your success. It is indeed a great time to be streamside!)

Back in the 60's up to the late 70's we used to catch them all the way up the Yuba, from the Daguerre to Engelbright. I never knew that they a were a specific species until years later. You can...
We fished the bonefish back then, too, but it's not widely known that they are there. Size and numbers are small.
Back when I lived in SD, 1979-1984, we used to catch stripers at the mouth of the Sweetwater River in South Bay. Even then it was a rarity and they were attributed to left-overs from the days when...
I love the colours (Canadian spelling!) of some of those smallmouth. Great photos and nice report. And you survived the mosquitos? Co
ngrats.
Landing them hasn't always been difficult. The hardest part for me is walking the fine line between playing them delicately enough to land them without playing them so long that I know that they...
I fished it in October back in 2000. Fantastic fishing for steelies to 10 lbs. (And no one else on the water!)
"The Yuba River, Scoobie Doo, and Bette Midler."
Years ago-in the early 70's- we were fishing out of Happy Camp. While enjoying a beer in a little bar/eatery, one of the local natives asked how fishing was going. My Grandfather replied, "fair", to...
The last one I caught was upstream about 100 yards from the picture in 1999. It rose to a dry fly out in the middle. Surprised me, too!
As for the depth of the water, I have caught fish in less...
Until 3 years ago I lived in Yuba City for 21 years and for the ten years preceeding I fished the "river Y" as many as 3-4 days week. When I would post about a particularly good trip, WOW would I get...
Where was everyone? (Maybe it was the Duck Opener that kept everyone away?)
Hit the water this morning at 7:05. 1st fish to hand at 7:52. 2 more to hand, 3 LDR's, and 3 missed takes by 9:30...
Encouraged by this weeks posts I took an exploratory trip up to Davis yesterday. I'm almost exclusively a stream/river fisherman so my lack of luck at the lake isn't indicative of how good/bad...
It's great to see the increase in returning salmon. It about broke my heart to see the bottom fall out of the run these last few years. As for the hatchery fish, I have on two other occasions caught...
Just needed to get out and only had a small window. On the water at 6:15. From 6:40 to 7:10 had 4 fish to hand on #14 EHC. Not much surface activity showing at all, really. But damned it felt good...
The N Yuba between Bullards Bar and Engelbright Res. Access through Dobbins at the Colgate PH. Best time is mid June. I LOVE smallmouth on a fly. I'm moving to Colfax in the next few months and...
