Opening day, 1 January
About 1975 I was fly fishing just above the Fair Oaks Bridge and hooked what I thought was a huge steelhead. It turned out to be a chrome bright 19 pound winter run Chinook salmon.
The grand Dean of Sacramento fly fisherman is gone at 99 years and six months.🙏🙏🙏
The grand old man of Sacramento fly fishermen is on his final lap. Joe will turn 100 this October. Needs all the prayers 🙏 and well wishes he can get. My pleasure to have known and fished with him...
Bill,
Used to fish this stretch in the late 60’s near Indian Jim Campground. Fabulous dry fly fishing. One late October day caught and released 113 fish. Almost all rainbows and a few browns.
Taken 11 years ago . My small one was about 8 pounds and the other by Jeff was about 14. This is what winter steelheading is all about.
Verified this info with USFW biologist. Oldest is 12 years and largest is 27.2 pounds at 36.5”.
Caption says British Columbia
Coastal Cutthroat from British Columbia
The grand old man and Dean of Sacramento fly fisherman turns 99 today. Enjoy your Special Day.
A couple in my yard.🍁🍂🍁🍂
Combination egg & beadhead.
Back this afternoon. Landed 3 trout and an 18-19” wild steelhead. A few salmon on the redds. Flow about 1,250 cfs.
Out this afternoon, three trout and this 21-22” hatchery fish. Salmon beginning to show up
Verified by local biologist as a cutthroat.
Mark: Now convinced this is a cutthroat after comparing it to pictures of other Rogue River cutthroat I have taken. Will have local biologist ID it.
Mark: It could have been a resident rainbow. Hooked and lost two other fish of about 21” & 24”s. Both jumped and were steelhead chrome.
Have been a 20 time visitor just to trout fish. If you do your due diligence on the Internet and query folks who have been before you will have a wonderful time without a guide. More than willing...
Tony,
Always love your stories. This was a beauty.
An honest report. The Rogue is very slow with no rain and salmon are late.
Use this type fly in the Fall months on the Rogue. Off to a very slow start and no salmon yet in the Grants Pass area
By mid-Oct fish are spread throughout the entire Rogue. Late October is usually the peak of the season.
Will start my Fall season tomorrow. This 30” fish was taken five years ago today.
My front yard in late October.
