Lance, thanks for the info. Is it advantageous to fish early mornings for the blue blacks (like for the winter run)? And I like high-stick nymphing -- any suggestions for that realm (I assume the Fox's Poopah and Bird's Nest)? Thanks.

"It’s March and Spring is right around the corner according to the calendar. If you look outside, Spring is already here. That means the Spring Steelhead are in the Feather River and the Blue Backs are showing themselves on the American River. This is the time of year to swing. Swing for the “Spring Steel”, is truly an amazing experience. The fish are feisty, and the acrobatics are incredible!
You must approach these fish with stealth. These fish are easily spooked. My setup is pretty simple. You can rig this on your single-handed rod or your two-handed rod. I use a the Redington Hydrogen 11’6” 4wt trout spey rod, lined with a Rio Chucker to match. I use long Fluorocarbon leaders, 9-12 feet long tapered to 4x tippet. Then I tie my fly on. I use the 4x tippet for my smaller flies (Size 10-14’s) and then after I use that leader (tie on two to three flies) I break out a new leader. The old leader will be perfect for my larger flies that I swing from size 6-8’s. The Fluorocarbon leader allows the fly to sink just inches underneath the water. The Fluorocarbon allows stealthiest sinking of the fly."

Many Valley rivers below the first dam from the ocean will have a mix of resident trout, Half-pounders and Spring runs / Blue Backs.

They will be feeding on insects, small fish and crayfish.

I hooked into a blueback nymphing last year. Hoping I can stick one on the swing.

I been swinging more and more. For nymphs I like my Jigged X-May in Olive, PMD and Brown Sizes 16-18, Fireworms in Red Sizes 12, Thurman's Jigged Bird's Nest Brown and Olive Sizes 14-16 and Timmy's Poopah in Olive and Cinnamon in Size 12-14.

Don’t believe that Lance Gray guy. There are no fish in the Feather or American. No reason at all to hit the rivers until the shad get here. I recommend heading to Pyramid, or golf.😁
