Double Hand Overhead -- What Line

I've got to admit that I'm frustrated. I started the Spey/Switch journey several years ago while spending my winters in Southern Oregon. Was convinced it would help my shoulder pain. Not so much! All things considered we decided that cool, wet weather was at least a contributor to the pain so last year was Arizona.

Not sure why people like Arizona but to each his own. This winter is South to South Texas and saltwater fishing. To the point, I know two-hand overhead casting with long rods is popular on the northeastern coast for Stripers so might it work on the Texas gulf coast for Reds and Speckled Trout. I have a practically new cabelas TLR 11' 6wt. Not sure what grain weight it's rated for other the the "6wt".

Any suggestions as to lines this rod might perform well with? I tried a Scandie line with Versa leader and the overhand cast felt awkward. Will a regular weight forward, maybe an 8-9 weight work better?

Any advise is appreciated!

Maybe a Rio Outbound Short full line?

I agree with Bills suggestion. I’d try an 8wt for your 6wt rod. Try to buy one used/cheap first so that if you don’t like it you aren’t out full price.

Rio switch chucker is another option. In that case you should match the line wt of the rod.

I believe the biggest place for the two handed overhead casters is the East Coast Atlantic surf wadding for Stripers and Bluefish.

Yup! Been there done that but only used a single hand and a 30 year old shoulder. I think there is a small group of flyfishers on the lower Texas gulf coast also but they don't seem to talk about things much. I'm taking a fly rod this winter, maybe I won't get to use it but if I can figure a casting technique that will give me another year or two I'll try it. A guide contact said that there are days where the surf by Corpus Christie can be almost flat and the big Reds come in very close. In addition if the jetties aren't crowded some guys fish flies off the rocks.

I've already have numerous lines spooled up up to a 10wt and several are Salmon/Steelhead Rio lines. Headed for the river Tuesday with several reels and see what might work.
