Let's Talk GT's
Those last couple of posts by Jcolin really got to thinking about GT's and Christmas Is. And while looking back at YouTube I found another fantastic video about GT's and the Seychelles. Any of you who are crazy about GT's like I am have probably already watched the videos of them catching birds while flying low to the water, or the guy that made a bird fly out of a flip-flop sandal and fished it with success.
The video I just came across is titled "GT Hunt - Cosmoledo" and is one of the best. It shows not only GT's but numerous other game fish that inhabit the area and gives you a good feel for what the Seychelles are like.

I hope I'm not getting too old for this kind of stuff and it's just a pipe dream, but what a way to go :)

I went to Australia in October with those guys who shot the video of the sandal fly that caught the GT's. One of the guys caught a GT around 70 lbs from the beach on a Queen fish that he had hooked into and was fighting. The Queenie was around 12 lbs before it was eaten.
We have encountered some big GT's in Aitutaki in the coral heads. Purple and black was the color. You also need a few extra fly lines. E2's brother said the best time to catch the real big GT's was late February and all of March. They come in from the blue water into the bay to feed on the bait fish. The only draw back, this is monsoon season. You either hit it or miss it.
Were going back in October/November 2021. This trip is actually cheaper than my Baja trip and much cheaper than CI. No layover in Hawaii.

Hi Jay,
On my last trip there Jim May and I swam with them next to a dive boat where people were tossing whole hamburgers to them, bun and all. They swallowed them whole. I got a few pictures with them. One looked to be almost 6 ft.in length.

GT Flies....???
I guess you could use some layers of appropriately colored, thick foam to make a hamburger fly. ;) ;) Must've been fun to swim with GT's. Really like the first photo of that dark GT and the clear water at Aitutaki.

All tackle world record Giant Trevally is 160#...............
All tackle world record Jack Cravelle is 54# 7 oz .............
Almost any 50# salt water fish would be a battle on a fly rod.

At Christmas Island about 15 years ago my brother Dick hooked about a 30# Trevally on a Bonefish fly off the side of a big flat.
While the Trevally was shaking it's head trying to get rid of the little fly and "huge" shark grabbed it and ate it.
My brother ran across the flat over to where I was to tell me it scared the "shit out of him."
________________________________
On that same trip my brother hooked a nice Bonefish that was running along the edge of a flat when maybe 6 big "black"
Giant Trevally came in from the deep and ate his Bone. Then they left out into the deep water in the bay taking his Bone and fly.
After about 100 yards the tippet broke.............it was thrilling.
In my 13 trips to Christmas I have seen big "black" Giant Trevally come on the flats at high tide and eat everything.

Veterans like Tony and Jay have been to lots of places but I still think that Christmas Island can be the best first flats trip for most.

Damn-it !
Photobucket "improved" it's website and now I can't get the actual photos to come up without having to tap on the link.
I liked the old way before. I want pictures NOT links.
Any suggestions to posting pictures? What do you guys use ?

You should've seen the ones we saw in November out on the reef. I cast a big purple/black fly to them and within a couple seconds I was hooked up and off. They shredded part of my line going through the coral. Jubilee saw one well over 100 pounds. I think he would've pulled that steel boat through the coral. I can't wait to go back in Oct/Nov

I couldn't remember his name but Jubilee was a long time well experienced guide who grew up there and seemed to know a lot about everything. It was nice to have that little larger boat when we went through the reef and fished outside the lagoon.
I'd use him again anytime.

We have him and willie booked for our trip. I'm thinking about taking him up on his offer to let me stay two weeks on his island. I told him that all I needed was some water and a little bit of food. He said he would bring it out every day.. His island is surrounded by bone fish flats.
