Halfpounders have been stacked up in the fly only section of the Trinity for the past three weeks, I have been going up at least once a week for the last three weeks and it has been very good though the fish are becomming more selective on what they are hitting.
I did float Bucktail down to Steel Bridge yesterday and managed a good number of fish in the upper run but little the farther daown I went.

are these half-pounders or are these small immature steelhead released by the hatchery. i've caught some of these before the september closure (average 8-12") and they just don't seem to have the natural bright colors that naturals would expect to have. they're also lined up in the water - very unnatural for native fish to hold so tightly. Anyone really know?

They're juevenilles that haven't made it to the ocean yet. And yes a far different beast than the ones you can catch down by Hoopa in September and October.
One day those that survive will become adult steelhead.
Hopping that someone add more information about Trinity river half-pounder fishing to this thread?
When do the fish typically show up and in which sections of the river?
Are there any river conditions that one should look for? cfs min max, temp, past rains.

Just mentioned that since Jon's OP was from 2006. That 2007 fall run must have seen as many fishing guides as there
were guides on all the fly rods in the water. What an insane time!
