Last Thursday my buddy Tres and I headed up to the Trinity from the Bay Area. For me it was the third trip in a little over two months. We were a little worried about the huge storm that was going to hit but in the back of our minds we were hoping that it dropped lotsa snow and we were able to be 'stuck' on the other side of Buckhorn Summit. The threat of the storm must have kept everyone away because we saw very few fisherman. And the weather never was really that bad. On Friday we hit it fairly early and Tres hooked up with the only fish of the trip at the end of the day. It was his first ever adult steelhead landed. He's hooked up with plenty but for some reason, never had the opportunity to get a photograph and a release. The smile on his face says it all. This fish was about 20" and was one of the most active jumping fish that I've ever seen. It repeatedly left the water. This was a VERY active fish but for some reason, it went right into the net without a challenge. It was caught on a golden stone nymph.
Saturday started out with dry weather like Friday but it showered on us in the afternoon. Tres and I both had a few bumps but no real hookups. It was a little bit disappointing that it was so slow. The flows were REALLY low. We visited the area that was really hot back at the beginning of November but was really suprised at how low the flow was. The place looked totally different. This was the location that ycflyfisher caught fish after fish out on the point.
Unfortunately, our trip was cut short because my buddy had a family emergency to attend to and we ended up hitting the road on Saturday evening. My chances at landing an adult steelhead for the third trip in a row to the Trinity were thwarted. Oh well. There will be plenty of more opportunities!
Enjoy the photos!
