Andy Guibord was telling someone today at the shop that someone was up at the fish hatchery on the lower American River and they were told that they have twice as many Steelhead in now as they did the same time last year.

Might be worth hitting the river from Goethe park downstream to Cal Expo now.

So, I'm between jobs for the next couple of days and think I'm going to check out the American on Friday morning. Can anyone offer me advice on fly type and size? I was trying to time my job switch so that I'd have the opportunity to fish a little. Friday is my only chance...

Thanks!

Actually, Nimbus received 426 adult steelhead as of November 30, 2006

As compared to only 31 adults by November 30th. of last year.

Many adults have been caught around Goethe and mostly by incidental means.

About 2 weeks ago, a fellow was coaching another guy on spey casting from the gravel bar/island below the cable. They left empty-handed in a Klackacraft drift boat, after working the run for about 3 hours.

10 minutes later a 9 lb chrome hen was landed by a rookie using beads, ouch.

I've seen over 25 adults landed in the same region during the month of November alone.

I've only had the good fortune of 5 adults so far this fall/winter but 1/2 #ers-4# bows landed are in the triple digits. Kinda' skewed though... I fish a LOT

This is really great news. Hopefully, the numbers of fish will continue to increase in the coming years and the steelhead fishery will get better and better. I gotta get out there!

Thanks for that report 'Steelies'

We had a slow fall Halfpounder run so it would be wonderful if we got a good winter run.

I like the 26c3 in your "handle". Nice touch. :)

I have no idea about the 26c3, but perhaps I should reconcider the #18 comparaduns I just finished tying for tomorrow's fishing? Based on my experiences this year I figured I would only have a shot at a premigrant or two.

No adults or halfpounders for me this year on the A.

I do believe it is the code for the American river as it is noted on your steelhead card....

Took the kids to the Hatchery at Nimbus yesterday. There are some nice sized adults in the ladder and the staff there confirmed the steelhead numbers are up from this time last year. Hopefully a good year ahead.
