I was sitting down with my wife for lunch today and she said those magic words. "Honey, why dont you go fishing this afternoon while I take William Christmas shopping?" HMMMM, let me think a second sweety.....Well, I guess that'd be Okay  :D :D .
After a while of procrastinating I finally made it to the river. I pulled up to a spot I like at about 3:30 and was suprised/disapointed to see another car there. As I approached, the guy was coming to his car and finishing up. He said he hadnt any luck and was leaving. We exchanged pleasantries and I husled into my waders. The gent sat on his tailgate enjoying a cup of coffee. just as I grabbed my rod to head down, a drift boat came thru. I was shocked and delighted to see they fished the wrong slot all the way thru the hole. The fella on the bank watched me make my first to drifts and then bidded farewell. As he drove away I hook up on my 4th cast. A small 21" native that went nuts and ended up hogtied and landed fairly quickly. I make my way back to the spot and extend a cast way out past the current break into the slower, deeper stuff. The fish like that water when its really cold. The fly stops but I am way late on the set. I am briefly connected to a very large, heavy headshake. The fish bolts downstream and comes off. I quickly single hand spey a cast to the same spot...maybe theres another?? Same thing, same spot. This time, I was ready. This fish didnt shake its head. The second it felt the hook, it was off to the races..I love those the most :D . After several jumps and a very respectable tussle, the battle was over. The picture didnt capture its power, but I enjoyed it immensly. Not a huge fish, maybe 6-7#. And I found myself murmerring a thank you to my wife as I released it in the cold quiet water.
I fished til the sun went down without another touch. It went from 3 fish in 6 casts, to nothing for the next hour.
I love this river. I love these fish. Oh, and I love my wife :D
