Myself and a couple buddies are trying to put together a first trip to the Rogue. We will be wade fishing and were curious on some potential areas to check out with access and what would be a good month to target (January, February, March). Not looking for any specific locations and I know timing varies, but thought I would throw this out there. Thanks.

Definitly march for the upper river. The middle rogue can be good too but its a bigger gamble with flows the further down you get. keep an eye on the flows http://waterdata.usgs.gov/or/nwis/uv/?site_no=14339000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010,00076 anything under 2800 cfs is very good. anything over 3000 becomes very dificult. 1200-2000 is ideal.

Touvelle park has a lot of good access and is a good jump off point. Working your way upriver youll hit dodge bridge (location of the river link above). then takelma has some great water. Next spot upriver is the town of Shady cove, theres some decent access there. keep heading upriver and check all the public access clear up to the hatchery. If the river is blown out, you can still have good fishing conditions from Casey up to the hatchery.

The upper rogue is very good nymph water and youre best bugs are, ugly bugs in black and brown, prince nymphs, copper johns and glo bugs to name a few. If the water is above 48 degrees and theres decent numbers of steelhead, swinging can be good. use big, flowing flies like rabbit leeches and egg sucking leeches on sinking lines.

Good luck!
PS Heres a teaser from last March
