My friend Darryl Doke is just now retiring and moving to Sisters, Oregon.

Some years ago he told me a great story from his youth.

His aunt and uncle lived on Saint Thomas in the Caribbean chain. When he was a teenager he spent some summers there. He took his fishing gear with him. He got pretty good at catching the local Tarpon off the rocks in the AM with his Fenwick spinning rod, Mitchell 306 spinning reel and Mirror Lure plugs.

Back then over 40 years ago Joe Brooks came to St Thomas in search of new salt water fishing destinations.

The people at the marina/tackle shop told Joe Brooks of Darryl's ability with the tarpon and so Darryl actually took Joe Brooks fishing. I think he said they jumped a tarpon or two which was pretty cool.

I use to read Joe Brook's magazine articles when I was that age.

Hey Bill,.... Good story. I have some reading material by Joe Brooks. 8) Interestingly enough, the flies and tactics he used to catch a world record Striped Bass in Coos Bay would probably work today in the Delta.... 8) 8)
