I've been sitting here with nothing to do (ya right) thinking about making some 15# furled leaders. I've gone into Google and pulled up a bunch of websites with instructions on how to construct them

What is this board they are talking about. I know my partner does furling with his antron but I need a leader longer than 1". Lee S. mentioned something about using a vise to make twisted leaders (I think) or that might of been my brain getting twisted.
I have used furled leaders in Baja but they were given to me. I know they can't be that conplicated to make. Just gotta figure out how and where to make the tie offs.

I know I can make a furled fly line. Is that the same technique

Thanks

Jay

Hi Jay,.... The board most refer to is a peg board described in detail under a thread on Dan Blanton's Board. It's been a whike since I saw the information but it is very descriptive of the process and the board. 8) 8) 8)

Frankly,.... I didn't really think the time/effort it takes to make a furled leader was worth it when a twisted leader may be made very quickly and with little expense. 8) 8) I know that furled leaders have been well received but I've used twisted leaders recently and find that they provide cushion to strikes and can turn over heavy flies, even at a distance. There's been some discussion of both of these leaders on this BB but no detailed description of the board and the process, as I recall. 8) 8) 8)

So a twisted leader and a furled leader are two different type of systems.
Dang, now I have a headache. Gotta go to bed, going fishing in the morning. Maybe I'll troll a fly with a 50' of 15# mono, that should make a twisted leader :D

Thanks

Just to confuse the matter further, Bill Nash describes "FURLING LEADERS FOR SHOCK ABSORPTION", in his book Fly Casting systems. The process described is one way to build a twisted leader. 8) 8)

I haven't seen Leo Guttierez make one yet but he accomplishes a very tight twist that's not easily done with your hands. I've made mine using my fingers/hands and the method from Bill Nash's book. Both are very effective. 8) 8)

My brother and I have been making them for a couple of weeks now. They are really easy to make and work quite well. Here are some links that I used to get me started. The board can be changed any way you like to make the size that you want.

If you use the "search" function, on this BB, a lengthy discussion of construction/use of twisted leaders was made under the topic, "Leader Systems". 8) 8) 8)

Bring your string this w/e. We'll do up a bunch around the "campfire".
Very quick and easy to do. 8)
PS - The Nor-vise makes "tight" an understatement. You can get'em tight enough to curl.
