After calling the "wind lady" early this morning seeing that overnight it rained a little here in the valley, I had thoughts about some Forebay fishing. According to the report, the wind was "zero"
So I decided to throw the pram in the back of the truck and truck on over. Made a quick stop at Starbucks in LB. Ya know, ya can't function without the shot of caffine.

Got to the Forebay, paid for boat launching and headed to my launch site. Seems like the water level is still up from the last time I was there.
I was on the water in a split second and motoring out to the bouys. Then I saw a couple boils inside the weeds so I turned the pram around and headed in the general direction. Made a couple cast and hooked into a small striper. Released him in no time, took a swig of the now luke warm coffee and once again headed to the bouys.
Didn't mark to many fish but then again, I don't count on the fish finder to tell me the truth. I use in mainly to find the holes and shoal line.

To make my long story short, I was getting bored so I decided to move closer to the weed line. I tired something different this morning. I tied on a Merkin Crab pattern about the size of a quarter and made a few casts into the weeds. Low and behold, a striper was hungry. Not a big striper but a striper. Also caught a small LMB on the Merkin.

Enough fishing, headed back home to work on the 20 dozen Sea Habits I have going right now. More fishing reports next week.

Ya know, it must be getting close to winter. It was pretty chilly out there this morning with a short sleeve t-shirt and shorts. :-D

Hey Jay,
The Merkin strikes again. I've been picking up all sorts of species on that pattern down here. Don't know why it works, but looks like you added another couple to the list.
I've been tying them with EP fiber type material instead of the rug yarn.
Lets one trim down on the beach, etc. Easy tye for sure.
Its already cooling down here...no more wet wading in the distant future.

Paul,

Sounds good. What's been eating the Merkins down there.. I'm going to tie a micro merkin up in crawfish color and see if a carp will eat it. Lately, I've been tying alot of them for guys going to Australia for permit and Golden Trevally's.

Thanks

Jay

Hey Jay,
So far my tally list is both perch species WSP and BSP, halibut, corbina and a bat ray that was near mouth hooked. Might have spit before the set...dunno.

Had follows from bonefish in Kauai but no takers. Did get a couple cornetfish tho, although I think they'll hit anything moving slow enough.

The corbina really pile drive those merkins. I've been fishing a modified version in the picture below. Grey silly legs and UV krystal for the tail. Grey EP fibers for the body. Bright fire orange thread and a wrapping of Orange electra flash around the dumbells for an eggsack. I tie them large and trim em down till something starts biting.
So far they really seem to be a durable bug for a day's fishing.
I've bumped into a few other dudes throwing merkins...some down to size 10 with success
I've done well on the traditional style also I tied for a friends trip a while back. This one just seems to match the mole crab down here better.
Fun pattern to tye none the less.
