Headed out to the upper truckee river (near Kirkwood) on this busy Saturday.

Beautiful weather, a decent breeze, excellent temperatures, what a nice day.

More important, NO MOSQUITOS. Earlier this year I was eaten alive.

For those interested, the hike in takes 1:15 to 1:30 before you will reach fishable water. There is a climb up then down. Same for return hike. The only species you will catch are Lahontan Cutthroat trout (A DFG experiment to rid non-native fish years back, with restoration of the heritage species). If these pictures interest you, go now, the weather is perfect.

Some pictures, enjoy.

A look back on the meadow water. Skinny but brimming with trout - only caveat - hard not to scare the fish. Otherwise 1 cast 1 fish, if they hadn't been scared off of course.

I almost made it up there on Sunday. It would have been my first visit, but I just didn't have the time to do the drive from South Tahoe and then the hike in and out. I opted for the section of river at the south end of Christmas Valley off Hwy 89. It was pretty, but Labor Day brought lots of swimmers. I managed to find a quiet area with several deep pools, and caught a small brookie. I am really enjoying fishing the high small streams so I have to make time to do that hike in from Carson Pass. Beautiful.

Any updates on the trout in these two streams? Are the flows worth my time now? How far East of Sorensen's do I need to go to pick up flows and fish on the west carson, (or can I find fish at/near the 88 bridge)?

Thanks

One of my favorite places, and one of my favorite times of the year to fish it. Showers Lake, another couple of miles in, is very good this time of year also. The cutts run a little bigger there.
