Fished the fly water Thursday through Saturday. Caught a ton of the usual halfpounders. I also hooked into a couple of large adult steelhead, I'd say in the 6-8 pound range. The first went airborne and then hunkered down across the river from me, there was no way I was going to get him back across the current with 4X, so I waited, after about 5 minutes he broke me off (on a rock, I'm sure). The second swam right in front of me then rolled into the current and shook me off. Man what a rush getting into those big steelies! They are starting to return, so get up there!! Should be red hot real soon. I did manage this guy...

Also, they are completely tearing up and redoing the river near the dam. All the brush across from the hatchery is gone. I spoke to the contractors and I guess over the years the spawning beds have kind of gotten shot, so they are creating some new ones with a large gravel bar right down the middle of that stretch. Also putting in a parking lot. Oh well, it's good for the fish. Here is some more info... http://www.trrp.net/

(Sorry about the big photo, that is the size photobucket decided to make it!)

The first time they did that work - many years ago it destroyed a premium brown trout fishery - I can remeber some great trips to wonderful weed bed laden runs above the old Lewiston bridge in the 70's and early 80's. But browns eat smolts so..... It broke my heart to lose that fishery!
