Here in California we have lots of reservoirs with land locked Stripers.

New Hogan is close to Sacramento and Stockton so it is a great place to fish for many.

It seems to be best for top water fishing in the warmer months of July, August and September.

You need a boat with a motor so you can get out there and chase the schools as they erupt chasing schools of Threadfin Shad.

You can use a #7, 8 or 9 weight rod with a weight forward floating tropical line one or even two sizes over. We like a Bonefish or Tarpon line with a stiff mono core because it is hot on the deck of a boat out here now.

I think a powerful 9' #8 weight rod with a new Rio "Quick Shooter II" WF9F would be really good there.

It is never a high numbers deal but it is exciting to see schools of Stripers busting baitfish. The fish run 4 to 6 pounds and sometimes larger.

Another plus is that the fish need to be thinned out so there is a higher than normal limit and the fish are very good eating from the colder, clean water.

Week days are best because it is a popular water ski and jet ski lake in the summer.

'Striper Commando' Dan Williams likes to fish till dark and then camp up there overnight and get up early and hit them again.

It has been good up there this year.
