I have been reading about furled leaders and was wondering if anybody here has any opinions on them.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,.... There's been some discussion of the subject of twisted leaders, including some mention of furled leaders in the heading, "Saltwater" under the topics, "Leader Systems" and (I think) Twisted Leaders.... You might be interested in that discussion.... 8) 8) 8) Some favor furled leaders over twisted. Both offer some positives. Since some refer to twisted leaders as furled, there might be some confusion to feret out.... :?

Enjoy 8) 8) 8)

Whether you're an expert or a begginer the book Furled Leaders (http://www.makefurledleaders.com) is the quickest, easiest way to learn how to create furled leaders, personally highly recommend. Not only that, you will save tons of money compared to store bought leaders!:)

I have begun to use furled leaders some. I can see some definite benefits. Biggest is they don't have the memory or stiffness of a tapered mono leader, so improve drag free drifts of dry flies. I'd definitely get yourself a couple and give them a try. So far I think I prefer the furled mono over uni-thread, but thread has a lot of proponents.

I tried a furled leader for the first time this season, and I absolutely love it. I got the Blue Sky Ultralight Furled Tapered Leader (BlueSky
Furled Tapered Leaders) in UltraLight, which I use with my 3wt for dry fly fishing. I thought of trying to make my own, but after reading some online how-tos, I decided it wasn't worth the effort (FWIW, I used to hand tie my own tapered leaders when I was a poor college student with more time than money).

The furled leader casts great. It'll turn over tiny flies with 5-7 feet of 6x tippet with ease.

I haven't use it with nymphs yet, but I suspect it'll do fine. I plan to get a heavier furled leader for my 5wt, which I use mostly for nymphing.

Our good friend John Quigley is a Bay Area Striper guide plus he makes furled leaders, twisted mono leaders and custom braided mono loops.

We carry all his products at our shop in Sacramento, CA.

Love them. Only drawback is the sprinkler effect one gets when lifting the line. They take floatant well and if you get someone to make you a thread leader, you can get one made in any color...lighter colors blend with the reflection looking up, but are easier to see for me on the surface, making indicators less necessary

As Darian points out there is some discussion regarding the difference between furled and twisted leaders. I ran across this site (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbcVaEe3RIs), after Charlie G tied a Quigley leader on my striper rig, and have not used a tapered mono leader since. I love the way they cast especially big bugs. My hands get a little sore after I make a few but I also don't have (another) a jig to store.

*I think this is an excellent video clip on how to make a "twisted" mono leader, not a "furled" leader.

**Maybe I can get John Quigley on here to discuss the subtle difference.

I have built and used both twisted and furled leaders. My preference is the furled leader as there are no knots to catch scum or weeds. They both turn over nicely and are less likely to kink. Try em you will like em.

I learned to make my own with the following DVD

I have also purchased them from John Quigley, he makes great leaders!
