Many of the top professional black bass anglers in the world will compete in Stockton on March 22-25 as part of the Bassmaster Elite Series' "Duel in the Delta."
The series will visit 11 fisheries across the U.S. in 2007, including the California Delta and Clear Lake. The season kicks off on Alabama's Lay Lake on Feb. 23-25and moves to Lake Amistad in Texas on March 8-11, before heading west.
"We're excited to host the Elite Series in downtown Stockton," said Don Miller, director of the Stockton Sports Commission. "BASS last brought its most top-tier fishing circuit here in 2003 and that four-day competition was a tremendous boost to local tourism and spotlighted the Delta as the premiere black bass fishery in the country."

The upcoming BASS contest, with a first place purse of $100,000, will be aired on ESPN2.
Doug Grassian, communications director for BASS, said he expects 3,000 to 4,000 bass fishermen and fans to attend the daily weigh-in and participate in the fair-like atmosphere at the edge of MacLeod Lake.
"The pro anglers are excited to be coming back to California. Our stop in Stockton will boost the local economy their, too," Grassian said, adding that BASS has guaranteed 1,700 rooms for an entire week to accommodate its fishermen, staff and television crews.
The 2007 contest will mark the fourth time in the past nine years that Stockton has hosted a major BASS tournament. It comes at steep price. To bring the tournament here will cost the Stockton Sports Commission approximately $40,000, but Miller believes the investment is worth it.
"It's a prestigious event, with the top black bass anglers," Miller said. "We seem to get better attendance and national attention when we host BASS every two to three years. When we skip a year or two, we really create a demand. The nationaltelevision, newspaper and magazine coverage really puts Stockton on the map. There is just a lot of positive residuals to hosting BASS in addition to the money it brings to town."
Before heading back east, the Elite Series will compete on Clear Lake on March 29-April 1.
When BASS last brought its tournament to Stockton in 2003, local favorite Robert Lee of Angels Camp won the competition with 60.8 pounds of bass, and Elite pro Jimmy Mize of Arkansas took second place with 56.12 pounds.
