Hiked in to Round Lake off of Carson Pass on Saturday. We arrived at the lake at 10:30 to see many fish feeding on or near the surface. I’d never caught a cutthroat before & was looking forward to seeing one up close for the first time. I started by wet wading to cool my hot feet after the hike in. I was surprised at the dozens of fry to 2” fish that nibbled on my feet as I cast out to the feeding fish.
Total catch for the day was 0. The only one that came close was a 6-12” fish I saw turn away at the limit of visibility (20) ft from the birdsnest I was working.
All of the other fish were in the fry to 3” range.
That evening after the thunderstorm left we watched an otter or beaver swim across the lake twice. If it was an otter would that explain the lack of larger fish?
Had a great time any way. Mosquitoes are thick as usual this time of year.
