A friend asked me to take her boyfriend and son out next week. I'm unfamiliar with local streams. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I might take some newbies? I'd prefer small water. I usually fish the Rogue, Pit, McCloud, Stanislaus but too far or too high for a day trip. Preferably something within 2 hours from Elk Grove. Rubicon? North for of Yuba?
By the way. I fished the McCloud last week and it was amazing. Lots of Little Yellow Stones and PMD's. The water was perfect. Don't let the reports fool you. There are tons up fish up from the lake and they killed a #10 black wolly bugger once the sun was off the water. If anyone is interested in a McCloud trip and has never been, I'd be happy to assist. I've come to know it fairly well.

IMHO the best bet within two hours is either the Truckee or the Little Truckee.

Hi Billy. I just got back from the Rubicon, its pretty much red hot right now. Water temps just right for wet wading and Golden stones are all over the place. Had one land on my leg and run up my shorts  . Lots of fish caught, used a stimulator the whole time. Here's a tip, they work as well wet as they do dry. Good luck.

Man Rob, you have an eye for the camera. That river has a different mood everytime I go there and you caught several of them right there. Have you gone up to the South Fork? It's about a mile up the trail and as pretty a stream as you could imagine. From the trail you can see up it ( it's on the opposite side of the canyon), to the four waterfalls.

Yes we went up there last year.
We did not fish the south fork but did some swimming .There is a awesome swimming hole just 40 yards up stream. The Rubicon is a great place to snorkel.

We did see a bunch of these guys on the bottom .

I did fish the Rubicon on Mon eve. I love it. It reminded me of exactly why I fly fish. We get caught up in different species and exotic destinations but really what I love are mountain streams and eager trout smacking anything that floats. I will surely bring my friends next week. Thanks to all who responded.
Side note. The ranger was up there ticketing campers who drove down the road. Can't blame her, there was seven signs saying "road closed."

Hi - Could you tell me where you access the Rubicon? I once tried to do it from the west shore of Tahoe, up a very bumpy jeep road. Never was able to figure out how to get to the stream. Do you get there from Icehouse Road?

Where I fished the Rubicon is below Hell Hole Reservior. It sounds like you tried to fish it above. Make your way to Georgetown then take Wentworth Springs road. Its main street so not hard to find. Go about 22 miles and pass Stumpy Meadows. Look for a sign to Hell Hole/French Meadows and hang a left. That should be forest road #2. 3 miles down you'll cross the Rubicon. The best access appears to be a road on the other side of the river on the right hand side. You'll need to park at the bridge. Besides the dirt road to the river the entire drive is on paved roads. There must be other access places as well.
