If you could only take ONE dry fly with you on a fishing trip to a mountain stream or river , what would it be?? Mine would be a royal wolf.
I have caught more fish with it in California and Utah than any other dry fly. Cody and I fished the Left fork of the Blacksmiths yesterday here in Utah I tried 10 different dry flies and the Royal wolf was the one that worked the best.

sz 12 tan elk hair caddis it can imitate many different types of bugs and with a permanent marker and pair of scissors you can imitate even more bugs, but thats prbably bending the rules.

Hrmmm, close call for me, either the elk hair caddis or the royal wulff. I'd probably go with the royal wulff. I've had good luck with that fly, and have an attachment to it too, because it's the first fly that I learned how to tie.

I'll one up david and go small. Size 16 yellow humpy out here on the eastern sierras.
I feel like one of those chumps on price is right bidding 101 over the guy that just bid 100. lol.

My second choice would be a size 16 yellow Stimulator.
Cody landed 79 trout in 6 hrs on a stream near Blue lakes on a yellow stimulator , so I think it also would be his go to fly .

Now if I had only one streamer it would be a Green Zonker !!!

#14 Orange Stimulator - seem to have the best success w/ it.

#14 Elk Hair caddis, hard to beat. Caddis are everywhere, they float high in pocket water and offer a large easy to see fly to catch the trouts attention.

I think I'd like to take a #14 Lime Trude just for the fun of it. :unibrow:

I'm with Adam, here in CA I'd have to go with the Caddis also. I'll take mine with a Carpet Wing please

When I lived CO, the go to fly was a #14 Adams.

The Elk Hair Caddis did not exist until maybe 20 years ago.

We had a similar fly, the Buck Caddis.

I think Al Troth came up with the Elk Hair Caddis.

Maybe I will call Umpqua today and get their top 10 dry flies?

I picked the Adams Paradun because I like fishing flat water.

My go to fly for streams would be a #14 brown hackle peacock with Adam's style wings. I can't remember where I got the pattern idea, maybe saw it somewhere... but man it works. Swing it, float it, skate it, it'll catch fish.

Second choice I used to fish a lot... nearnuff, tan body, gold rib, brown tail, grizzly hackle.. fish never had a chance.

I have caought fish with a size 12 Rio Grande King in California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Virginia. Also the first fly I learned to fish with. However, my favorite fly may be subject to change if the fish don't agree with me.

My go to fly would have to be a #14 Yellow Humpy... Never lets me down.

If I run short on that pattern, I'd have to say my next pick would be a #16 Adams...

Hey Carl,
I thought the humpy came out the one fly also. Here's a cool article on the origins.

I also thought the one fly competition was dry fly only. :?:
I was surprised to see streamers as winning flies.
I think Kiene's has a video of the one fly contest.
