i live in the san luis obispo area and have been trying to find a good kayak for river and lake fishing. this area offers little choice. Is there any place in sac that would be a good place to shop. Also any suggestions on style and type for fly fishing on lakes and moderate rivers. All help is usefull. Thanks.

Hey Nick, check out Adventure Sports on Watt Ave. They have tons of different yaks. They also rent em by the day so you can try before you buy.

I will second Adventure Sports. I just bought my Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 from them last week. This is a great fast boat, that is extremely stable, and lots of room for your equipment. There are a lot of modifications you can put on your kayak to make them exceptional fishing boats.

-Foot Controlled Rudders
-Anchor Trolly Lines
-Fly Rod holders
-Fish Finders
-Plus many more.

This photo is by the UC Davis property. I pulled my Kayak with a rope behind me as I fly fished up river and also used it to cross. Many areas I could paddle up river. I use my Kayak to fish all way to the Narrows with out going above the high water line . And the trip back to my car was a peace of cake.

I have used mine on the Yuba River , American River and Lakes here in Utah and love It. Kayaks are so much easier to use when crossing rivers and covering a lot of water than pontoon boats .

Hey Rob, Thanks for that link. I drove by the old location a week or two ago, but they didn't put up a sign with the new address. Just a sign saying they had moved.

Hey Rob how goes it? Adventure sports is one store California Canoe and Kayak is another. Both are close to the American River. If you can't afford two kayaks, I use two A 16 ft one for big waters, ocean ,large reservoirs and a 12ft one for smaller waters and any river where I have to turn
quickly or avoid big rocks. If you can't afford both a 14 footer is a good
all around kayak.
Eugene, did i meet you at the Bill's Expo before last.

Hi Ricky,

I think that kayaks are steadily growing in the sport of fly fishing.

I guess I am so use to a flat bottom boat (1975 on) that I can stand in and fly cast and see down into clear water that I would want the absolutely most stable kayak available and live with the performance.

In the Wilderness brand I guess the 'Tarpon' is popular for fly fishers but I know there are many other good companies with great models too.

I think the 'Tarpon' comes in 10 to 16 feet. Eugene's parents bought two 10'ers and he bought a 14. I saw it in person and it is very nice. Around $700?

I just think getting out on the water in something that floats is so cool and changes your fly fishing experience forever.

Hey Bill, Great to hear from you. The Tarpon 160 always been one of my favorites as well as the Tarpon 120. There are a lot of great yaks out there now. Hobie came out with the Adventure which is a kayak that you can peddle giving you hands free for fishing and it paddles as well as a tarpon which I all ways thought was the best paddling yak on the water. I'll have a few yaks reviews in the next issue of Paddler Magazine.

Rickey,
Yes we did talk about Canoes last year. I really have been enjoying my Tarpon 140. I was out in it today (Natoma - Negro Bar - and paddled up river and floated down. I do need to get a rudder on it though. Where do you think are the best places to put a Scotty Rod Holder? I will also be installing an anchor trollie setup. I do want to keep the boat minimalist as possible.

Hello Eugene,
Congrats on a good choice. The best place for a rod holder is the area between the seat and the tank well. There's actually a spot on each side meant for a rod holder. Check out my Anchor set on my web page.
Minimal is good. Be careful on a river on any river with any anchor system.
Stay in touch.

Thanks for all your great info over the years. :) :)
Cody and I have been using our Yaks a lot here in Utah.
Used them twice this week trying to get into some 30-36'' tiger Muskie in a near by lake. The Kayaks are so easy to load and transport . We keep everything we need except for food and water inside our Yaks. Just put them in the back of my pickup and go.
Take care-
Rob :D

I would like to thank all of you for your input on this subject. was nice to hear from people who use their kayaks for fishing in defferent conditions and the pics said a lot. i was at the american for shad and stripers this last thursday from 6am to 10am. could have used one then. water was about 7000 cfs but did get a couple of shad from shore would have done better on the water tho. thanks again for the response. nick.
