The Caddis Fly fishing report for 04/08/06 Eugene, Oregon

. . : : Comments
Spring is finally here! Local rivers have started warming and bugs have started hatching. Opening weekend is almost here so lakes and tributaries are going to be an option shortly. Now is the time to get in some of the best trout fishing of the year. A few steelhead have been showing themselves in the McKenzie and Willamette as well so that is becoming more of an option everyday. Good luck and tight lines!

. . : : McKenzie River
Water Condition: Starting to warm, very fishable

Fishing Condition, Techniques and Hatches: The McKenzie has started to fish very well in the past week! There have been blanket hatches of a small black bodied caddis, along with March Browns and a few Blue-Winged Olives. The best way to catch fish right now on the McKenzie is with wet flies. Effective patterns are the Swing Tungsten Caddis in sizes 14 and 16, Blooms Soft Hackle in sizes 12 and 14, and the March Brown Spider in sizes 12 and 14. For a dry fly the Snowshoe March Brown is a very effective pattern in sizes 12 and 14. An effective caddis dry currently is the Peacock Caddis in sizes 14 and 16.

. . : : Metolius River
Water Condition: Good. The Metolius is a spring fed river so the water stays a fairly consistent temperature no matter what the weather.

Fishing Condition, Techniques and Hatches: Blue-Winged Olive and March Brown patterns are working best on the Metolius currently. The Tilt Wing BWO is an excellent dry fly pattern for this Blue-Winged Olive hatch and the March Brown's listed in the above reports are excellent options as well.

. . : : Middle Deschutes
Water Condition: The water temperature is improving and is at a good level.

Fishing Condition, Techniques and Hatches: The main hatch on the river right now is a March Brown. Fishing has been fairly good with March Brown dry fly patterns. Effective patterns are AK's March Brown in size 12 and the Extended Body March Brown in size 12. Nymphing with stonefly imitations and caddis pupa is also a good option when the dry fly fishing is slow. Try one of our new Strung-Out Stonefly nymphs trailed by a Tungsten Rubberleg Copper John in Black/Green.

. . : : Middle Fork of the Willamette (Below Hills Creek)
Water Condition: The river is still cold but starting to warm and fishable.

Fishing Condition, Techniques and Hatches: Effective patterns are basically the same as on the McKenzie. Don't forget to nymph this river. The Mega-Prince or the Tungsten Princess are very effective right now. Also a triple beaded stone can be a good alternative.
