In March we usually start warming up and this is usually a great month for a large combination of fishing opportunities.

Steelhead/Trout get real active in the Valley Rivers.

Trout are still on top in many lakes and reservoirs.

Bass and panfish are moving to the shallows.

Stripers get more active in the Delta and lower Feather River.

Hey Bill,

I am certainly going through withdrawals here.... our fishing season will start up in late April to early May. However we are certainly beginning to warm up here, (30's - 40's) I am expecting a bit of winter yet.

All that being said, the dolly varden fishing (incidental rainbows) on the Kenai is really good in the early season, but access is a bit limited because of unmaintained boat launches and frozen lakes, etc.

So, about 9 weeks to fishing for me... :(

Hi Ed,

I just shiver thinking about those winters up in Alaska.

Let us know when things get going.

Maybe email me some pictures?

Thanks Bill,

Here is an article that was printed in the Anchorage Daily News this weekend... unfortunately it has been considered a secret spoiler, however I don't really think that there are many who will truly endure the winter fishing on the Kenai!

I am presently thinking that frozen guides (me) are ineffective guides, so I am tying flies, painting beads, and rigging up for the up and coming season. When the fish start running on the Kenai, there won't be time for this kind of work... it will be non-stop fish-sleep-eat ... not necessarily in that order.

By the way, I have a few images of Alaska fishing and scenery at

Enjoy,
