I am contemplating heading up to the American this Friday to give it a shot. I live in SF and probably only have time for a half day of fishing. I know the basics of the river but am no means a veteran....wondering if anyone thought it is worth the trip right now or if flows are too high and fishing has been slow. Any updates or thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My vote currently is too high.

Here is the link to the flows. I have hooked fish at 10,000 cfs but like it MUCH better at 5,000.

I would go, flows are down, heck yeah go for it, I live in the east bay and this last Salmon season I would get the A just before sunrise fish for 5 or 6 hours and be home by 1:00PM :D ...hey this is my first post \:D/

I'll be up there this weekend Sailors or Upper Sunrise can't wait

I think the gauge has been messed up. I was out yesterday and it said 14k but it was actually around 5k or 6k. It read 14K for a couple of days when the scheduled releases called for a drop in flows... :?

Is there a place i can launch and take a shuttle or catch a ride back to my truck in the area? what areas are good for a drift? Ive got the weekend off and dont mind the rain for a little fishing so im looking to go, any help would be great. Thanks

Flows have dropped to about 5000 cfs. I fished yesterday at Sunrise, hooked one fish. It was very easy wading. I doubt if they will be raising flows through the weekend. Bryan :D

Welcome to the board everyone! For dreamingincolor - the most popular float for steelies is from Sailor Bar to Rossmoor. It's a full day float if you stop at the good spots to fish 8) I think somebody at the shop does shuttles. Give em a call, they'll hook you up! 8)

It is great to have some nice and honest feedback about fly-fishing for a change.....it is not the experience I have had on other boards/forums. Glad to join fellas,

i may have goten myself in a fix, have planed all wk to get in a drift sunday, arranged the shuttle etc. went to the show all day , came in this eve stoked for tomorrow only to find out tomorrow is the old ladys b day!!!
seems like women would give some suttle hints to us men folk who knowingly have selective memories as far as aniverseries and b days go. too late now to change the direction of the flow so ill just ride this one out and see if we can weather the inevitable fall out. wish me luck guys both on the water and when i get back. youd think theyd realize you can celebrate a b day any time but can only fish when you arent working. oh well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure you'll survive, but it may be a little cold for a while. I've been married for 34yrs ( I know medal of honor) and I can still remember the times I went fishing on my wifes birthday and Valentines day. The worst was a 3 day chuckar hunt on the same weekend as her birthday. I think Valentines day is just a trap invented by women.

This tangent really demands a thread of its own...heck maybe even its own website! I will never forget (or should I say, my wife will never let me forget) when I did a 3 day fishing trip over mothers day. The first year my wife was a mother. At the time I thought, "hey, youre the mother, not me, I'm goin fishin". That one hurt me for a long time. Just last year, she and I took a little getaway on moms day weekend and she suggested I bring my gear and do some fishing. This is 12 years later. See, Time does heal. And remember, with wives and fishing, asking for forgiveness is much easier than asking for permission.

what a luckey man i am!! the lady was all smiles when i got back this evening, course the flowers and card helped. said she was glad i enejoyed myself, even had a turkey in the oven for dinner, said she would rather stay at home and relax rather than go to dinner. kinda made me wonder, tried a sneak pc of turkey on the dog, he is still fine so i guess it may be safe to eat :D
wonderful 1st trip on the americam, 1- 1/2 pounder about 14'' landed. another nice fish on but to no avail was he geting close to the boat.
both on alvin patern. saw a nice fish landed on a san juan worm. had to do the float alone as my buddys daughter was sick and he was at band aid station this early am. kinda hard to make a good drift through some of the riffles. one hour and fourty min from house doing 60 or so. looking forward to next time already, gues the old lady is right about me being obsessed.
i am truly blessed to live here, and to find a lady that will put up with me

A friend I fish with wife really went the extra mile like yours did on one of our fishing trips. I made a comment that my wife wouldn't have done that. He reply was that his wife had a better boyfriend than my wife did and that he sure hoped his wfe kept him.lol
