The information I am looking for is river depth. What is a good level to go fishing at. My pops is coming in to town soon and he fished this river years ago and he wants to go back. If is not good when he comes I'll figure something else out. Thanks

Hi Beast,.... New poster :?: If so, welcome to the community.... :D :D

There's a minimum flow requirement for legal fishing in DFG Regs and a telephone number to find out if it's even open to fish.... :? If the water is above that level and below flood stage, it should be OK. If I recall correctly, the Van Duzen is good in February and March (....maybe some of the guys up there can chime in with better info).... 8) 8)

Welcome Logger

I would call the Eureka Fly Shop and see if they have any suggestions.

707 444 2000

February is usually a good month, averagely, for winter Steelhead rivers.

Be sure to check the Regs.

That is a funny little river that you have to learn as far as access goes too.

I have seen people talk about it a Lotte on the web.

We fished it from its mouth upstream on foot a few times back in the '70s.

Logger,
I drive along the Van Duzen on the way to work every day, as far as levels go it does not matter much as long as the color is good.
The River is only fishable from Bridgeville down, there is a natural block that inhibits the fish from traveling farther upstream.
It fishes best in Feb and March but by the looks of it today, it will be at least a week before I would even think about fishing it assuming we do not receive a drop of rain.
In all honesty, we have been hammered up here this year with wet weather, the only game in town (Humboldt Co.) is the Smith, he Chetco Occasionally, the rest are out indefinitly. The Trinity, Eel, Van Duzen and Mad have been unfishable since Mid Dec.
Hope this helps, PM me or send e-mail if you want current reports.
